Interview with/avec KINGDOM

On March 23, 2023, the group KINGDOM (킹덤) presented us with their sixth mini-album "History Of Kingdom: Part VI. MUJIN".

KZ- Let's talk about your latest work, why do you say that Mujin is the protector of the Cherry Blossom Kingdom? Where does the story come from?

MUJIN: In this album, I choose to seal 108 evil spirits who have stolen the vitality of the kingdom directly into my body, in order to restore the kingdom to its former glory as a beautiful place filled with cherry blossoms. By protecting the source of vitality, the divine tree, I safeguard the kingdom. As cherry blossoms symbolize the kingdom in itself, efforts were made to highlight the significance of cherry blossoms in the story of KINGDOM.

KZ- Parlons de votre dernière œuvre. Pourquoi dites-vous que Mujin est le protecteur du royaume des fleurs de cerisier ? D'où vient cette histoire ?

MUJIN : Dans cet album, j'ai choisi de sceller 108 mauvais esprits qui ont volé la vitalité du royaume directement dans mon corps, afin de redonner au royaume sa gloire d'antan, celle d'un endroit magnifique rempli de cerisiers en fleurs. En protégeant la source de vitalité, l'arbre divin, je protège le royaume. Comme les fleurs de cerisier symbolisent le royaume en soi, des efforts ont été faits pour souligner l'importance des fleurs de cerisier dans l'histoire du ROYAUME.

KZ- Dann and Mujin have participated in the composition of the album, what has been the most difficult part?

DANN: I didn't compose, but I participated in writing the lyrics. I participated quite a bit in our album, but every time, I had a lot of thoughts about how to capture the uniqueness of the song.
MUJIN: For me, it was difficult to find the sound that best expresses the message I wanted to convey, and I struggled with how to make it more authentic.

KZ- Dann et Mujin ont participé à la composition de l'album, quelle a été la partie la plus difficile ?

DANN : Je n'ai pas composé, mais j'ai participé à l'écriture des paroles. J'ai participé assez souvent à notre album, mais à chaque fois, j'ai beaucoup réfléchi à la manière de capturer le caractère unique de la chanson.
MUJIN : Pour moi, il a été difficile de trouver le son qui exprime le mieux le message que je voulais transmettre, et j'ai lutté pour le rendre plus authentique.

KZ- What is your favorite song on the album and why?

ARTHUR: My favorite song on this album is "Song of the Wind." The lyrics are very impressive, and the atmosphere and flow of the song are to my taste.

KZ- Quelle est votre chanson préférée sur l'album et pourquoi ?

ARTHUR : Ma chanson préférée sur cet album est "Song of the Wind". Les paroles sont très impressionnantes, et l'atmosphère et le flux de la chanson sont à mon goût.

KZ- Let's talk about the central theme, "Dystopia". The definition of the word is "Fictional representation of a future society of negative characteristics causing human alienation."
What do you think makes humanity alienated?

HWON: If indifference continues in the society we live in, I think our society will eventually turn into a dystopia. Therefore, I believe that people's indifference leads to human alienation.

KZ- Parlons du thème central, la "Dystopia". La définition du mot est la suivante : "Représentation fictive d'une société future dont les caractéristiques négatives provoquent l'aliénation de l'humanité."
Selon vous, qu'est-ce qui rend l'humanité aliénée ?

HWON : Si l'indifférence persiste dans la société dans laquelle nous vivons, je pense qu'elle finira par se transformer en dystopie. Par conséquent, je pense que l'indifférence des gens conduit à l'aliénation humaine.

KZ- "Dystopia" is an epic dance pop track that incorporates a powerful bass and melancholic sounds of traditional instruments, dancing over drum beats. How was the track born?

MUJIN: At first, the name "Kingdom of Cherry Blossoms" felt too bright, so we had a lot of discussions on how to establish the album concept. However, since the main content revolves around the pain felt by King MUJIN, who is trying to bring back the Kingdom of Cherry Blossoms, we ended up using intense sound to convey this story. As the title track, it is the central song that embodies the story of this album. I hope you will check it out to see what kind of story is being told.

KZ- "Dystopia" est un morceau dance pop épique qui incorpore une basse puissante et des sons mélancoliques d'instruments traditionnels, dansant sur des rythmes de batterie. Comment ce titre est-il né ?

MUJIN : Au début, le nom "Kingdom of Cherry Blossoms" nous a semblé trop brillant, et nous avons donc beaucoup discuté de la manière d'établir le concept de l'album. Cependant, comme le contenu principal tourne autour de la douleur ressentie par le roi MUJIN, qui essaie de ramener le royaume des fleurs de cerisier, nous avons fini par utiliser un son intense pour transmettre cette histoire. En tant que titre, c'est la chanson centrale qui incarne l'histoire de cet album. J'espère que vous la découvrirez pour voir quel genre d'histoire elle raconte.

KZ- When shooting the video clip, what inspires you?

LOUIS: The song takes up the biggest part. Once I get inspired by the music, I first express the images that come to my mind, and then I look for movies or animations that fit as a reference for additional details.

KZ- Lors du tournage du clip, qu'est-ce qui vous inspire ?

LOUIS : La chanson occupe la plus grande partie. Une fois inspiré par la musique, j'exprime d'abord les images qui me viennent à l'esprit, puis je cherche des films ou des animations qui s'y prêtent comme référence pour des détails supplémentaires.

KZ- Tell us about "Love Is Pain", what do you want to transmit in this song, to whom or what is it dedicated to?

DANN: The story of "Love always comes with pain" is conveyed in the song. I focused on expressing the unique color of this song rather than dedicating it to a specific person. It is a song that captures the appeal of KINGDOM within our intense music, and I hope it receives a lot of attention and love.

KZ- Parlez-nous de "Love Is Pain", que voulez-vous transmettre dans cette chanson, à qui ou à quoi est-elle dédiée ?

DANN : L'histoire de "l'amour s'accompagne toujours de douleur" est transmise dans la chanson. Je me suis concentrée sur l'expression de la couleur unique de cette chanson plutôt que de la dédier à une personne en particulier. C'est une chanson qui capture l'attrait de KINGDOM dans notre musique intense, et j'espère qu'elle recevra beaucoup d'attention et d'amour.

KZ- Tell us about your plans for 2023.

IVAN: Our plan every year is to always work hard and do our best, no matter when and where. I hope this year will be a year where we can meet more overseas KINGMAKERs.

KZ- Parlez-nous de vos projets pour 2023.

IVAN : Chaque année, notre objectif est de travailler dur et de faire de notre mieux, quels que soient le lieu et le moment. J'espère que cette année sera une année où nous pourrons rencontrer plus de KINGMAKER à l'étranger.

KZ- Who is the protagonist of your next work?

JAHAN: The protagonist of our next album is me, JAHAN, the king of the Kingdom of the Sun. Please look forward to how I will return to the next album.

KZ- Qui est le protagoniste de votre prochaine œuvre ?

JAHAN : Le protagoniste de notre prochain album est moi, JAHAN, le roi du Royaume du Soleil. S'il vous plaît, attendez avec impatience de voir comment je reviendrai dans le prochain album.

KZ- A piece of advice for people who want to dedicate themselves to music.

DANN: This path is never easy and we will encounter numerous obstacles, but I hope that you will enjoy making music with the same happiness and passion that you had when you first started. Please never forget your initial aspirations and I will always support you!
