The group WARPs UP owes its name to the acronym of "Wave Assemble Radical People-syndicate" and debuted on December 17, 2019 with the single "Rock Tonight" under the AVEX label.
Its members are RIKIMARU, LANGYI, SANTA and MINGJUN.
Now, RIKIMARU and SANTA are active in China’s music scene as members of the new boyband INTO1, which is made up of 11 ‘CHUANG2021’ finalists and will be active for a limited period of two years.
In this August, Langyi and Mingjun formed a self-cover project. So far they released Chinese-language versions of three songs Pleasure, Planetarium and PLANET between August and September 2021.
Let’s know more about them.
KZ- How did you get into the music world and what are your influences?
M- I got into dancing because of Michael Jaskson when I was at a very young age, and while K-pop got it’s hit in China, I found myself in love with BIGBANG, and finally got to know about the job being on stage, and made my decision and got on my way to be a trainee in Korea.
L- I was doing part-time job in a dance studio while I was in college, and there’s this company that came and held an audition with the studio, and that company has later become the company that I was assigned to. I was largely influenced by my parents, they was singers in a bar while I was at a very young age, so would used to go to work with them. I would be their audience while they are on stage. So that kinda lead to the thoughts of being on stage and singing under the spotlight.
KZ- LANGYI and MINGJUN were formerly members of the Chinese boy group before they started working with WARPs UP . How was the experience?
M- After the big audition TV show in China, I was able to formed a boy group with some trainees. For me, it was a start. Although the process was not perfect, it taught me what I needed to know to be around people in this circle and it had also made me more mature and comfortable as a member of WARPs UP now.
L- I was lucky enough that I was able to experience training, performing, and being on magazine, shooting variety shows and etc. That helped me a lot for being in WARPs UP in a terms of having the confidence and knowing what I’m doing and knowing my approach. (And I’ve also trying to share that experience to also helped other members Rikimaru and Santa who haven’t been much involve on this side of stage until they joined WARPs UP. )<—
KZ- Since "Supernova" we have noticed a more rock sound, what do you want to transmit?
M- This song is also a dance track, but what we want to say is more than that, what we always wanted to show is about WARPs UP as it has always been, unity and determination.
L- We actually don’t have a fix style, for me any song that can represent the different style of all four of us is a good song for WARPs UP.
KZ- How did you come up with the theme "Pleasures" for the anime Fruits Basket: The Final? Do you like the series?
M- I hope that people who hear this song will gains power in believing themselves, reflecting on themselves and be hopeful.
Because I've always loved anime, and of course, Fruits Basket is in my favorite list.
L- It’s our pleasure to be able to have the chance to be able to be on the opening for Fruits Basket: The Final. Because I’m not really an anime person, but even me personally know about the anime Fruits Basket. So I watched all the seasons ahead of The Final. I’m really in love with Toru, she is a very kind and nice person, and someone that I wants to become in the future, using my own positivity to be able to influence people around me, and make the world a better place full of kind and positivity for all of us.
KZ- How did the idea of making Chinese-language versions of the three songs come about?
M- I think that was a great opportunity to show our Chinese fans how much we value them and how much we've improve as an artist recently.
L- Actually all three songs are originally Japanese, but since we are a mix group of Chinese and Japanese, we were hope that we can bring out a different version out to our fans. Both Planetarium and Planet are very famous and well-knowing so I was also afraid my Japanese weren’t good enough to present them lol.
KZ- Which was the most difficult to adapt and why?
M- For me in fact, the greatest difficulty of doing the cover of someone else is to have our own new arrangements of the song, new lyrics and a deeper understanding of the song.
L- I would say both Planetarium and Planet. Because we have to fully understand the meaning behind original version, and add in our own way of expression to present it. And alsobecause we know that the emotion behind the original is unbreakable, so what we had to do is try our best to present it in a way of ourself without making too much changes to the original, so that gave us a little pressure.
KZ- Will you continue to release Chinese-language self-covers?
M- I wish we will continue to bring out cover contents. And at the same time, we will also prepare more exciting and original contents as well.
L- I personally really want to bring out more covers to my fans, but at the same time I also want to do more original songs too!
KZ- Allez-vous continuer Ć publier des auto-covers en chinois ?
KZ- Do you have any plans to release new songs? If so, please tell us as much as you can.
M- We are always focusing on improving ourselves and preparing new content for our fans, so we hope everyone can look forward to more coming soon!
L- We are already preparing for us, I also dyed my hair for that, but we need to keep it in secret still.
KZ- Avez-vous des projets de sortie de nouvelles chansons ? Si oui, dites-nous tout ce que vous pouvez.
M- I’m extra bless to be saying that my dream is exactly what I'm doing, but there's still a lot of things I haven't done yet, like small concerts, and after that one day in the future I want to be able to be on stage with my idols.
I also want to learn more skills and hope to develop in more fields in the future.
L- I hope the four of us could be doing a concert together in 2023, but above that I wishes for the health for everyone.
M- We've known for a long time that we have many fans from all over the world besides Japan and China, and we're very surprised and happy to be able to meet all the fans around the globe. Although we may not be able to meet all of you for a short time, we will try our best to show more of what we want to show and express. And I’m looking forward to see everyone sooner in the future!!
L- I really hope to see all of you all around the world next year or in 2023, I’m very thankful for all of you who join the journey with us and keep supporting us! And I wish everyone can achieve their own dream and be who they want to be too!
