Aivan (ģģ“ė°) debuts in Japan on May 9, 2017 with the single "Can't Control" with Evermore Music; His fandom is known as NAVIA.
With a mini-album and four singles in Korea, he has just unveiled the fifth, ģøź³µģ§ė„
Let's know something more about him.
A- My birth name is Yohan Lee. It’s a biblical name equivalent to “John” in the English bible. I wished to find a name that’s unique in the industry and came across some variants, which included Shaun, Eoin, Ian, Juan, Evan, and Ivan. I liked how Ivan sounded so I adopted the name but added A in the front only because it is my favorite alphabet.
A- I grew up in a church in Montreal, Canada. Literally living on its third floor, I was blessed with the opportunity to access all sorts of instruments ever since childhood. It was my greatest pastime activity to experiment different instruments in an empty chapel after school. I found my passion for performing as I joined the church praise band back in middle school. In fact, I started out as a YouTube self-taught bassist.
A- Frankly speaking, I still find it challenging to define my musical genre. My songs float across all kinds of genres including R&B, soul, acoustic, rock, pop, etc. I enjoy tackling and experimenting with different musical genres rather than sticking to one. Thus, I would have to say the terms, “hybrid” and “cross-genre” define my musical style the best.
KZ- What other skills do you have besides singing and composing?
A- I used to be a K-pop idol trainee. I’ve invested 4 years of my life acquiring skills to perform as a dance group act. Thus, I would say that dancing could be considered a skill I’ve attained. In addition, I could perform as a one-man band by using a sophisticated musical device called “loop station.” It allows me to tie up multiple instruments into one and sound like a full band when it’s actually just me and a few instruments present on stage.
KZ- What memories do "Tell The World" bring back for you?
A- I have a special attachment to “Tell The World” as it is my official debut song. I remember doing a countdown prior to its release. Its lyrics portray a man’s desire to brag about his loved one to the whole wide world. Parallelly, it depicts my desire to showcase the beginning of my musical career to the global audience.
KZ- Quels souvenirs vous rappellent "Tell The World" ?
KZ- Let's talk about your new single "ģøź³µģ§ė„".
A- AI(ģøź³µģ§ė„) is a heart-warming single that was released on April 29th. It is a song that reflects the emotions of artificial intelligence assistants that live inside our smart devices. It’s a melodic song that anyone could easily sing along to. I would love to see some covers online.
KZ- Parlons de votre nouveau single " ģøź³µģ§ė„ ".
A- I obtained my master’s degree at Yonsei University in 2019. As I was writing my graduate thesis, I came across an interesting research paper about the emotions human feel when encountering artificial intelligence. It kind of shook me as I’ve never thought of the issue. One the way back home, I spent a significant amount of time communicating with Siri on my iPhone and ended up writing a song about it. The song’s lyrics are written in the perspective of our little A.I. assistants.
KZ- Of all the lyrics you have composed, which one would you say was the most difficult and why?
A- I often find it challenging to translate lyrics from English to Korean. As lyrics must not only efficiently deliver the writer’s intension, but be culturally fluent, it requires a lot of thinking and experimenting. Out of all the songs I’ve released so far, “Knotted Wings” was by far the toughest, as I initially wrote it in English.
KZ- Your latest works are singles, when will you release a new album?
A- I have dozens of sketches in my Mac that are waiting to be released. However, full-length albums require a heavy workload and well-constructed strategies both pre- and post-release. I can’t say much at the moment, but I can promise that my team and I are currently putting in a lot of effort as it is our greatest interest to put out as many songs as possible for our beloved NAVIAs.
KZ- Tes derniĆØres Åuvres sont des singles, quand vas-tu sortir un nouvel album ?
KZ- If you could work with another artist, who would you like it to be?
A- I can come up with at least ten artists instantaneously: IU, Eric Nam, Sam Kim, AKMU, Taeyeon, Ed Sheeran, Shawn Mendes, Taylor Swift, Anne-Marie, and Clinton Kane just to name out some. I can go on all day.
KZ- Si vous pouviez travailler avec un autre artiste, qui aimeriez-vous que ce soit ?
KZ- When you can, which country would you like to visit on tour?
A- I’ve been filming a YouTube series called “AIVAN COVER AIRLINE” for the last several months. I choose out a country that I’d like to visit, and then find a popular song in that specific country to do a cover of. I’ve virtually travelled to the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, India, Turkey, and
Poland so far. I’d love to go on an ACA world tour one day, visiting all of the countries I’ve made virtual stops in. There are already 7 countries that I must visit.
A- My dream is to log my life in the form of music and share them with my fans. Whether in small or big event, I wish to meet all NAVIAs personally and express my gratitude by performing for you guys. I greatest hope is to grow old with my fans.
A- I am very well aware of all the love and support you guys are sending me from all over the world. I apologize for not being able to meet you in person. I promise that I’ll make up as soon as COVID-19 settles down. I can’t wait to see all your faces and hear your voices. Thank you for all the kind words. It truly means a lot. Love you with all my heart. Stay safe.
