Los premios que tomaron el relevo de los Kirby Awards (finalizaron en 1987) fueron creados como homenaje al escritor y dibujante Harvey Kurtzman y la primera entrega se hizo en 1988. La entrega de los galardones tuvo lugar en el evento de la NY Comic Con, el 5 de octubre.
